The School Counseling Program at Stono Park Elementary

A school counseling program reaches EVERY student and focuses on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for an individual's successful academic achievement, career development, and personal & social growth.  A counselor's time is spent maximizing the benefits of a program that serves ALL students.

  • A successful school counseling program works collaboratively with parents, students, staff, and community members to ensure every student reaches their potential.
  • All students at Stono Park Elementary School should leave our school with a strong sense that they are valuable to the world, they are capable of setting and reaching their goals, they are independent and dynamic thinkers who can make informed decisions, and they take responsibility for their own choices knowing they can not control the thoughts and behaviors of others, but they can always control their own. 
  • The school counselor is a part of  an educational team, working together to help our learners develop and attain their academic goals, future dreams and goals, and help guide them to be happy, thoughtful, and positively contributing citizens.


School Counseling Components

School counselors provide services to students, parents, school staff and the community in the following areas:

Direct Student Services
Direct services are in-person interactions between school counselors and students and include the following:

  • School counseling core curriculum: This curriculum consists of structured lessons designed to help equip students with the knowledge, attitudes and skills appropriate for their developmental level. The school counseling core curriculum is delivered throughout the school’s overall curriculum and is presented by school counselors in collaboration with other professional educators in the classroom and group activities.
  • Individual student planning: School counselors coordinate ongoing activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
  • Responsive services: Responsive services are activities designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.

Indirect Student Services
Indirect services are provided on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors’ interactions with others including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.

In addition to these duties, we also regularly provide consultation with parents, teachers, other professionals and community stakeholders.

The Professional School Counselor's Responsibility to Students

The professional school counselor:

a. Has a primary obligation to the student, who is to be treated with respect as a unique individual.

b. Is concerned with the educational, academic, career, personal and social needs of the students and encourages the maximum development of every student.

c. Respects the student’s values and beliefs and does not impose the counselor’s personal values.

d. Is knowledgeable of laws, regulations and policies relating to students and strives to protect and inform students regarding their rights.


The professional school counselor:

a. Keeps information confidential unless disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed.

b. Recognizes his/her primary obligation for confidentiality is to the student, but balances that obligation with an understanding of the legal and inherent rights of parents/guardians to be the guiding voice in their children’s lives.
